Mourners grieving a Maryland tourist who died in the Dominican Republic slammed the local health officials who blamed her sudden death in part on the “shock” of her partner dying next to her in bed.

Loved ones gathered Monday to mourn 50-year-old Cynthia Day, who was found dead last month next to her fiancé, Nathaniel Holmes, in their hotel room at the Grand Bahia Principe La Romana resort, according to news station WRC-TV.

A preliminary report released by Dominican authorities indicated that the couple died from respiratory failure and pulmonary edema.

But at the service, the mourners expressed anger, saying the couple had “no health issues” and referring to the claims as “nonsense.”

“She had no health issues. Her and [Holmes], they had no health issues. He had high blood pressure. That was it,” friend Meshonn Madison said at First Baptist Church of Glenarden.

Earlier this month, a Dominican health official said Holmes died, then Day followed, “probably from the shock of seeing the person beside her dead,” according to Fox News.

“It’s nonsense. When you look at the study, we’ve got now three people that have died within days of each other at the same resort of pulmonary edema with secondary heart failure,” said attorney Nick Szokoly, who represents other families of American tourists who have died on the island, according to WRC-TV.

A lawyer for the Day family also rejected the Caribbean island’s findings regarding the couple’s deaths.

“When you have so many similar situations, there’s reason for us to pause,” attorney Steven Bullock told the news station. “We’re gonna investigate this and get this matter resolved.”
