Robert Mueller’s key deputy Aaron Zebley was expected to appear alongside his former boss at Wednesday’s hearings on the former special counsel’s report, according to multiple reports.
Zebley will advise Mueller, but not answer questions, as Democrats only plan to swear in Mueller as a witness.
Mueller made the last-minute request to have his deputy sworn in for Wednesday’s hearings before the Judiciary and Intelligence committees on the Mueller report in case the former FBI director needed help with any questions.
Republicans cried foul, charging that Democrats were pulling a last-minute fast one.
GOP Rep. Doug Collins of Georgia accused Democrats of adding “a surprise witness,” CNN reported.
