Los Angeles officials said a murder suspect helped look for a missing friend and purported to find his body before he was arrested.
Jeremy Sanchez, 17, was allegedly stabbed to death by the 16-year-old friend who, along with another teen, alerted authorities Wednesday about the body in a riverbed near South El Monte, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office.
The suspect’s identity has not been released since he is a juvenile.
“The person who killed him is the one who said ‘look there here is,’” sheriff’s homicide Lt. John Corina said.
Sanchez, a star athlete, was reported missing Wednesday after he didn’t show up to school at South El Monte High School, news station KTLA reported.
The teen was found stabbed to death about 13 miles from downtown Los Angeles and appeared to have died at the scene, officials said.
Authorities received a tip Thursday that the 16-year-old suspect could be linked to the death. The longtime friend was reportedly involved in the search party assembled by the victim’s dad.
“This person kills his friend and then acts like, ‘Oh, I’ll go out and try to find him,’” Corina said. “It is almost like he was trying to throw everyone off.”
A search warrant was obtained early Thursday for the suspect’s home where “very helpful” evidence was found, according to officials.
The 16-year-old male was then arrested and booked at Los Padrinos Juvenile Detention Center for murder.
