A music student from New Jersey and two others were killed when a tractor-trailer sparked a chain-reaction crash involving 11 cars in Pennsylvania on Friday night.
Ethan VanBochoven, a 22-year-old student at Messiah College, died when his car was smashed into on Interstate 83 in Lower Paxton Township around 8:30 p.m.
Zachary Lybrand, 24, and an 18-month-old girl, both from Middletown, also were killed.
VanBochoven, a resident of Pompton Plains, was in his senior year at the private Christian college in Mechanicsburg and studying music with a concentration in commercial music, the school said on Facebook.
“He was active in the Messiah College worship community, serving in the Powerhouse Band and as a member of the Messiah College Symphony Orchestra,” the college said. “He also served as the manager of the men’s lacrosse team for two years.”
At a memorial Sunday night, friend Deanna Preziosi described VanBochoven as “somebody that was always super excited to see you.”
“To try to come to terms with the fact that a friend would have to go through something like this and the fact that their family now has to deal with this situation is extremely difficult,” Preziosi told PennLive.
Dauphin County police said traffic had slowed on I-83 but the driver of the tractor-trailer, Jack Edward Satterfield III, failed to stop.
He barreled into cars in the left and center lanes. Seven others were injured.
Satterfield, 29, was charged with vehicular homicide while driving under the influence and accidents involving death or personal injury.
He was denied bail.
The crash left a stretch of the highway — which had been under construction for lane widening — closed until 4 a.m. Saturday pending an accident investigation.
