Condolences from former first ladies poured in Sunday for Nancy Reagan, one of the most powerful presidential spouses in US history.
“Nancy once wrote that nothing could prepare you for living in the White House. She was right, of course. But we had a head start because we were fortunate to benefit from her proud example and her warm and generous advice,” said first lady Michelle Obama in a joint statement with her husband, President Obama.

The two chatted for 45 minutes, during which the former first lady advised that Michelle have lots of state dinners, Reagan told Vanity Fair in 2009.
“Our former first lady redefined the role in her time here,” the Obamas said. “Later, in her long goodbye to President Reagan, she became a voice on behalf of millions of families going through the depleting, aching reality of Alzheimer’s,” a reference to the disease that former President Ronald Reagan suffered from.
Former first lady Barbara Bush also noted Nancy Reagan’s devotion to her husband, Ronald.
“Nancy Reagan was totally devoted to President Reagan, and we take comfort that they will be reunited once more,” said Bush, whose husband, George H.W. Bush, served as vice president to Ronald Reagan before becoming president himself.
Nancy’s influence was “complete and lasting,” added the Bushes’ son, former President George W. Bush, in a statement with his wife, Laura Bush.

“When we moved into the White House, we benefited from her work to make those historic rooms beautiful,” the pair said.

Her strength of character was legendary.”
Former President Jimmy Carter also paid tribute, calling Nancy a “woman of strength and wit.”
But his statement didn’t include wife Rosalynn, who was reportedly at odds with Nancy as the Carters were getting ready to leave the White House and the Reagans were coming in. Nancy was supposedly pushing to get them out early, infamously saying she couldn’t wait to “get the smell of catfish out of the White House.” She later denied saying this.
Jimmy Carter said Nancy’s dedication to the US was matched only by her husband’s.
“Theirs was one of our nation’s great love stories and a model of shared devotion to our country,” said former President Carter. “America is stronger and better for their service.”
