The truth is still out there.
NASA announced Thursday that it has appointed its first-ever director of UFOs — because it still has no idea what a number of mysterious flying objects actually are.
The space agency admitted the ongoing mystery while releasing findings from a yearlong independent study into reported sightings of what are now formally referred to as “unidentified anomalous phenomena,” or UAP.
“The top takeaway from the study is that there is a lot more to learn,” NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said, declaring his desire to take the conversation “from sensationalism to science.”
“The NASA independent study team did not find any evidence that UAP have an extraterrestrial origin.
“But we don’t know what these UAP are,” he said.
The All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) is studying what “normal” phenomena such as solar glint or balloons look like to military sensors. NASAMany reported sightings have been attributed to planes, drones, balloons or weather conditions, the investigation found, without elaborating on specific cases still perplexing experts.
Still, the agency chief remains among those who believe there’s life on other planets — even though his own scientists put the likelihood at “at least a trillion.”
“If you ask me, do I believe there’s life in a universe that is so vast that it’s hard for me to comprehend how big it is, my personal answer is yes,” Nelson said.
He dismissed rumors that the US government — or any other — is hiding aliens or their spacecraft, saying: “Show me the evidence.”
“The mission of NASA is to find out the unknown … Whatever we find, we’re going to tell you,” he said, promising that “NASA will do this transparently.”

That decision was blamed on threats and harassment already aimed at the 16-person panel behind the independent study, which cost just under $100,000.
“That’s in part why we are not splashing the name of our new director out there because science needs to be free. Science needs to undergo a real and rigorous and rational process, and you need the freedom of thought to be able to do that,” said Dan Evans, NASA’s liaison with the panel.
NASA said the new director of UAP research will handle “centralized communications, resources and data analytical capabilities to establish a robust database for the evaluation of future UAP.”

“Observations of objects in our skies that cannot be identified as balloons, aircraft or natural known phenomena have been spotted worldwide, yet there are limited high-quality observations,” the report said.

In 2021, the government issued a report compiled by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence in conjunction with a Navy-led task force detailing observations, mainly from military personnel, which also failed to reach clear conclusion on the mysterious objects.
Two senior US defense intelligence officials also told a 2022 congressional hearing that the Pentagon was committed to determining the origins of UAP.
