Germans were infuriated Saturday by an extremist politician’s dismissal of the Nazi era as “just a speck of bird s–t in over 1,000 years of successful German history.”

Angry rebukes flew at Alexander Gauland, co-leader of the anti-immigrant, anti-Islam Alternative for Germany party. He made the remark at a youth party congress.

“Yes, we plead guilty to our responsibility for the 12 years” of Nazi rule, he said. But “we have a glorious history and one, my dear friends, that lasted a lot longer than those damned 12 years.”

Condemnation of the comment came from across the political spectrum.

Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, secretary general of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Party, said Gauland’s comments reveal the true nature of a party hiding behind middle-class respectability.

Katrin Göring-Eckardt of the Green Party called Gauland’s comments a slap in the face to Holocaust survivors and their descendants and said they highlight the need to push back against a hate-filled minority.
