The South Carolina man accused of abducting and killing his 6-year-old neighbor, Faye Marie Swetlik, later committed suicide, authorities said Tuesday.

Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher said Coty Taylor, 30, slit his own throat last Thursday — the day the girl’s body was discovered.

Taylor was found dead and covered in blood on his back porch shortly after the child’s remains turned up in a wooded area near her home. She had been put there just hours earlier.

Investigators said Taylor abducted the first-grader on Feb. 10 and strangled her to death hours later.

In the three days between Swetlik’s kidnapping and her body being found, investigators spoke with Taylor, who let them search his home.

Nothing in his home suggested that the girl was ever there, Cayce Public Safety Director Byron Snellgrove said at a press conference.

“He was cooperative and gave consent to agents to look through the house. Those agents did not see anything that alerted them to believe he had knowledge or was in any way involved in Faye’s disappearance at that time,” Snellgrove told reporters.

Asked if investigators knew where the child was during that time, Snellgrove said: “we do not know at this time.”

Authorities didn’t reveal why Taylor, who did not have a criminal record, would have kidnapped and killed the girl. DNA evidence from his home linked him to Swetlik, they said.

He didn’t know her or her family, Snellgrove said.
