New Jersey health officials are warning that an airplane passenger infected with measles traveled from Israel to Newark last month and may have exposed others to the virus.

The New Jersey Department of Health said Thursday that the individual traveled from Tel Aviv with a confirmed case of measles and arrived at Terminal C in Newark Liberty International Airport on April 16.

Officials said that anyone who was at the airport between 4 a.m. and 8 a.m. on that date might have been exposed to the highly contagious infection.

A person who may have been infected might not show symptoms until May 7, the department added.

A total of 704 cases of measles have been confirmed in 22 states this year, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

The number is the highest amount of cases reported in the US since 1994.
