Starting today, new, 15 percent tariffs imposed by the US on $115 billion in consumer staples imported from China will likely hike the prices on Chinese clothing, shoes, toys, toothbrushes, headphones, milk, pacifiers and bed linens.
Household appliances from China, such as coffee makers, microwaves, toasters, irons and hair drivers, will also be affected.
Previous tariff hikes had targeted non-consumer items from China, such as imported steel.
The new tariffs do exclude such holiday shopping staples as cellphones, laptops and video game devices — those won’t hit until mid-December at the earliest, in time to stock up beforehand.
China said Thursday that it’s “willing to negotiate” with the US in an effort to stem the escalating tariff war.
