A 3-week-old baby girl was found floating in a wooden box in the Ganges River in India.

The newborn baby was overhead crying by a boater who rushed over to the box floating near the banks of the river Wednesday in the northern Uttar Pradesh state, the BBC reported.

“When I opened the wooden box, I found her,” Gullu Chaudhary told reporters.

She was wrapped in a red scarf in the box decorated with images of Hindu deities.

The box also included a horoscope card with information about her birth date and indicated that her name was Ganga, which is the Hindi name for the Ganges, the outlet reported.

Chaudhary cradled the baby in his arms and brought her to his house, where police picked her up, the outlet reported.

Child welfare officials brought her to the hospital, where her health is being monitored before she’s brought to a shelter.

No possible motives have been released for her abandonment, but baby girls are seen as a financial burden in the country, particularly in poorer communities, the BBC reported.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath praised Chaudhary for rescuing the abandoned baby — and announced that he would be rewarded with government benefits, including a house, for showing a “matchless example of humanity.”
