A newly engaged Florida woman was critically injured when a restaurant roof collapsed as she was celebrating with her new fiancé in Cancun, Mexico, loved ones said.

Hailey Cooper had been dining out with her fiancé William Hewett on Thursday, just days after he proposed to her on a beach during a vacation to the resort destination.

“They were in Cancun eating lunch when the roof of the restaurant collapsed on them,” her cousin Sydney Conroy wrote on Facebook.

While her fiancé was uninjured, Cooper suffered a broken back, complete pelvic fracture and concussion among other injuries, Conroy said.

Five other people were injured and one died in the incident at the beach club restaurant on the island of Isla Mujeres, the Riviera Maya News reported.

Cooper was brought to a hospital in Cancun before she was airlifted to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Medical Center in Miami, according to a GoFundMe page.

She is currently in the intensive care unit and has a “long road of recovery that lays ahead,” the page said.

“Hailey is one of the strongest human beings I know. I want more than anything to be with her right now, but I’m so thankful she has Will by her side during all of this,” wrote friend Cayla Cole on Facebook.

Local authorities are still investigating the restaurant incident, but suspect that strong winds may have played a role in the roof’s collapse, the outlet reported.
