A New Jersey schools superintendent was arrested after he allegedly punched a woman in the face and fought a man during a street brawl at the Jersey Shore over the weekend.

Douglas J. Petty, the superintendent of Lodi Public Schools in Bergen County, was arrested in Seaside Heights after he was spotted fighting on the sidewalk around 1:20 a.m. Sunday, according to an affidavit obtained by NJ.com.

A traffic cop said he saw Petty, 46, punch a woman in the face with a closed fist on a street corner before, according to the document. 

When additional officers arrived, Petty was on top of another man on the sidewalk as the traffic cop attempted to break up the fight and struggled to put Petty in handcuffs.

The second officer was able to cuff Petty, who was brought to the Seaside Heights police station, the affidavit said.

Seaside police Detective Steve Korman told NJ.com that Petty and the man began fighting after the man approached Petty after watching him punch the woman. He said that “after a brief verbal altercation, a physical altercation ensued between the two.”

It’s not clear why Petty punched the woman.

Petty was charged just after 5:15 a.m. the same day with simple assault with intent to cause bodily injury — a disorderly persons offense, according to court records. 

The head administrator was taken to the Ocean County Jail and released on Monday, the outlet reported.

Petty’s attorney, Raymond Raya, told NJ.com that his client has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

“We look forward to vigorously defending him on this matter,” he said. “I will reserve any further comment until after the proceedings are finished, which we believe will be done expeditiously.”
