WASHINGTON — President Obama told donors at a private meeting in Texas that it was time to unite behind Hillary Clinton.

He didn’t explicitly suggest Bernie Sanders drop out, but said the Vermont senator’s campaign was nearing its end, sources inside the closed-door meeting last Friday told The New York Times.

Obama conceded that some people were not “excited” by Clinton, his former secretary of state, but he praised her as smart, tough and experienced.

The president told the donors at the Democratic National Committee fund-raiser in Austin that Clinton would carry out the priorities of his administration.

Fresh off big wins Tuesday in Florida, Ohio, North Carolina and Illinois, Clinton hit the fund-raising circuit this week.

And Sanders kept fighting, with his campaign sending out a fund-raising e-mail to backers.

“So long as you’re with us, Bernie can keep talking to voters to build our political revolution,” it said.
