Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has secured a spot on the House Financial Services Committee, a panel chaired by fellow progressive Maxine Waters that oversees the financial services industry.

Ocasio-Cortez confirmed her placement in a tweet on Tuesday night, writing: “Financial Services is one of just four exclusive committees in the House. It oversees big banks, lending, & the financial sector. I am very grateful for the opportunity to sit on this committee as a freshman, and look forward to working under the leadership of @RepMaxineWaters!”

Waters and Ocasio-Cortez, a Democratic socialist from the Bronx, will likely increase scrutiny of financial institutions on the committee.

The freshman congresswoman already has her sights set on several issues, she said in a tweet on Tuesday.

“Personally, I’m looking forward to digging into the student loan crisis, examining for-profit prisons/ICE detention, and exploring the development of public & postal banking. To start,” she wrote.

She was originally vying for a placement on the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, but was passed over last week for moderate fellow New York Democrat Tom Suozzi.
