An off-duty cop in Chicago was eluding police when he crashed into another car, killing himself and a woman early Tuesday, police said.

The unidentified officer was driving his Jeep at a high rate of speed when he collided with another car driven by the female victim at about 1 a.m. Tuesday in the city’s Lawndale section, chief police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi told the Chicago Tribune.

An on-duty officer tried to stop the Jeep prior to the crash and turned on the patrol cruiser’s emergency lights — only to turn them off at some point, Guglielmi said.

“We know the off-duty officer did not stop and fled,” he told the newspaper, adding that it was unclear if the on-duty officer was in pursuit at the time of the crash or the reason for trying to pull over the Jeep driven by the off-duty cop.

“The reasons for the stop are not yet known,” he said.

Guglielmi said there’s no indication that the on-duty officer knew the person driving the Jeep was an off-duty cop. Investigators are now scouring nearby surveillance cameras for clues, he said.

Sources told the newspaper that the off-duty cop was 32 years old and a member of the department since 2013.

Witnesses told WLS-TV they saw a Nissan driven by the unidentified female victim was struck by the Jeep driven by the off-duty cop. Both were pinned into their vehicles, which caught fire after the collision.

A cab driver who said he saw the entire incident told the station he saw the Jeep speed away from a police car.

“When the Jeep took off, the police took off right behind him,” the cab driver who asked not to be identified told the station.
