Two people were killed and three more injured by the knife-wielding madman on the London Bridge Friday, officials confirmed.
“Counter terrorism detectives will be working around the clock to identify those who have lost their lives and to support all the victims and their families,” Commissioner of Metropolitan Police Service Cressida Dick said at a press conference hours after the attack.
“We are also working at full tilt to understand exactly what has happened and whether anyone else was involved. For this reason we expect the cordon to remain in place around London bridge area for some time,” Dick continued.
The still-unidentified attacker was shot dead by police, Dick said, after he was tackled to the ground by good Samaritans.
Dick confirmed officials are treating the attack like a terrorist incident noting there would be a police presence in the streets in the coming days “to help reassure those who are understandably concerned.”
Dick said she couldn’t confirm the assailant’s identity.
“This is a very fast moving, dynamic investigation. I can’t comment on that at the moment,” Dick said adding investigators are “working as fast as possible to understand who this man is, where he comes from and if there if anybody else we need to find.”
“The empty ideology of terror offers nothing but hatred and today I urge everyone to reject that. Ours is a great city because we embrace each others differences,” Dick said. “We must emerge stronger still from this tragedy. In doing that we will ensure that the very few who seek to divide us will never ever succeed.”
Later Friday in the Netherlands, at least three people were injured in a stabbing attack in The Hague. The suspect is still at large, officials said.
