A run to the border proved deadly for a drunken man — and now two Ohio sheriff’s deputies are out of a job.

Deputies Derek Beggs, 29, and Christopher Hughes, 27, were fired by the Delaware County sheriff yesterday, after they dropped off an intoxicated man at a Taco Bell rather than arrest him for alleged drunken driving last year, the Columbus Dispatch reported today.

That drunken man, Uriel Juarez Popoca, 22, a Mexican national, was later struck by a car and killed.

The two deputies had previously been convicted of dereliction of duty and fined, the paper reported. Beggs and Hughes were responding to a call of a drunken driver on Interstate 71 on July 28 when they spotted an intoxicated Popoca in the median.

The deputies dropped Popoca off at a nearby Taco Bell rather than apprehend him, and he was fatally struck by a car later that night as he walked along the road, the Dispatch reported.

Delaware County is located north of Columbus.
