Shocking videos show an Oklahoma corrections officer forced to crawl on his knees after being taken hostage by inmates — before one was shot and killed after holding something to his neck, officials said.
The deadly drama Saturday afternoon at Oklahoma County Detention Center was streamed live on social media by some of the inmates — using the trapped warden’s own phone, officials confirmed.
It showed the panicked-looking officer sweating and on his knees with his hands bound behind him, his surgical mask pulled down off his face.
He had been handing out medication on the 10th-floor segregation ward when he was “overrun by at least one inmate and taken hostage,” the jail’s administrator, Greg Williams, said at a press conference.
“The inmate was able to take his radio and his keys and free many of the other inmates that were on that pod,” Williams said, confirming the warden’s phone was also snatched and used to live-stream the revolt.
The footage showed two inmates initially ranting about conditions and confronting the officer who knelt silently under their control.
The protest “ain’t got nothing to do with this” officer, one man was heard ranting in a clip. “He just happens to be a product of the situation, man,” the voice said.
Several others flashed gang signs and bragged about “gang s–t” as they were let out of their cells using the warden’s keys, according to clips posted online.
“N—as ain’t got nothing to lose!” one said, as some on the ward complained about not having clean water for showers or getting recreational time.
As the protest was streamed online, protesters gathered outside the jail to complain about conditions inside, according to KOCO News.
Within minutes, tactical response teams from Oklahoma City Police as well as Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office had responded to the jail, officials said — seemingly further goading some of the inmates.
“Cops out with the Glocks out!” one inmate was heard shouting in the footage.
The large police presence initially tried to “de-escalate” the mob — and only opened fire when one of them held something to the helpless warden’s neck, Sheriff Tommie Johnson III told the press conference.
“Lethal force was taken, and the suspect was shot on scene,” Johnson said.
Inmates continued filming after the shooting, showing the suspect unresponsive in a pool of blood, according to Fox 9.
“It was difficult to get in and take care of him” because it “was still a hostile environment,” jail administrator Williams said, while the sheriff confirmed that tear gas was also used to control the riotous inmates.
“We were able to get the detention officer out safely,” Johnson III said, with the officer able to walk out of the jail unaided and expected to make a full recovery from any injuries, which were not detailed.
Neither he nor the dead inmate was identified.
“I’m just glad the detention officer wasn’t more seriously hurt and we were able to get him out of there,” Oklahoma City Police Chief Wade Gourley said at the press conference.
