A pregnant Florida nurse went into labor during her shift as Hurricane Dorian pounded parts of the coast with heavy rain and strong winds, according to new reports.

Laura Suazo volunteered to work at Health First’s Holmes Regional Medical Center Monday, despite warnings that Dorian was making its way toward the east coast of the state, according to a hospital statement obtained by People.

She wasn’t due for three more weeks, but went into labor — and her bundle of joy, Penelope, arrived on Tuesday morning, three weeks early, the statement said.

“I was in the perfect place to have my baby and was so glad to be here in the hospital,” Suazo said in the statement. “I was definitely surprised I went into labor three weeks early, but have had an absolutely wonderful experience.”

Penelope was one of eight babies born at the hospital as the storm rolled through between Monday and Tuesday, a hospital spokesperson told People.

She weighed in at 6 pounds and 1 ounce, according to local outlet Fox 35.

Both mom and baby are doing well.
