A man hiding from authorities at a Texas church shot a pastor who confronted him Sunday morning, killing the preacher and injuring another person, officials said.

The 21-year-old gunamn had snuck into the bathroom of Starrville Methodist Church to duck authorities following a vehicle chase Saturday night in Winona, about 100 miles east of Dallas, news station KHOU reported.

When a pastor, his wife and several others arrived at the church Sunday morning, a confrontation occurred with the unidentified man, NBC News reported.

The pastor opened the door to the bathroom stall, pointed a gun at the man and asked him to leave, said Smith County Sherif Larry Smith.
But somehow, the man was able to disarm, shoot and kill the pastor, authorities said.
“The pastor’s firearm is the one he used,” Smith said, NBC News reported.

Another person also suffered a gunshot wound and a third was injured in a fall, Smith said. Their conditions are not known.

The suspect allegedly stole the pastor’s vehicle and fled the scene.

He led authorities on a chase that reached speeds of 120 miles per hour before he was pulled over in Marshall, KHOU reported.

The man was arrested and taken to the hospital, where he was treated for a gunshot wound to his hand, Smith said.

It’s unclear when he suffered the injury.

Smith has declined to say why authorities had been initially searching for the man Saturday night.

He said the suspect will be charged with capital murder.

Smith said there’s no reason to believe the church shooting was motivated by religion.

“This is not a church-related, religion-related offense,” said Smith, who suggested that the man appeared to take shelter there out of convenience.

Gov. Greg Abbott offered his condolences Sunday in a statement.

“Our hearts are with the victims and the families of those killed or injured in this terrible tragedy,” he said.
