An Israeli man was run over and killed by a Palestinian trucker in the West Bank on Tuesday when he jumped from his car with a club after demonstrators threw stones at him.

Israeli authorities said the 54- year-old man had just started striking Palestinian vehicles with the club when the Mercedes truck struck him, pinning him under a front wheel.

Medics tried to save the victim, but his injuries were too severe.

“When we got to the area, we saw a car,” paramedic Eyal Mor-Yosef told the Jerusalem Post. “Next to the car was a man in his 50s lying unconscious. He had no pulse and no breath.”

Palestinian authorities said the truck driver later turned himself in to the police and insisted the fatal incident near Hebron was an accident.

Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called for calm during a visit to Jerusalem on Tuesday ahead of meetings with Israeli and Palestinian leaders meant to bring an end to a monthlong wave of Palestinian stabbing attacks on Israeli soldiers and civilians.

“I deplore the random attacks against civilians. Such terror attacks make every place unsafe and every person, regardless of gender or age, a potential victim,” Ban said at a news conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Netanyahu said that the violence has been caused largely by incitement from Palestinian leaders, including President Mahmoud Abbas.

“President Abbas has not condemned a single one of the 30 terrorist attacks against Israelis over the last month, and he continues to glorify the terrorists as heroes,” Netanyahu said.

In Washington, Secretary of State John Kerry said he will be meeting soon with Netanyahu and separately with Abbas.
