PARIS — Thousands of onlookers yesterday gathered outside Notre Dame to hear the inaugural ringing of nine gargantuan new bells at the landmark cathedral.

The bells — the biggest weighs 6 1/2 tons — were ordered for Notre Dame’s 850th birthday. This was their first ringing since late January’s delivery. The nine joined the oldest bell to restore the 10-bell harmony originally conceived for the towers.
