WASHINGTON — In his first visit to Israel in a decade, House Speaker Paul Ryan said Monday that it’s clearer than ever that the Iran nuclear deal will be a disaster.
“I think what Iran is going to end up doing is going to make people rue the day they voted for that deal,” he told the Times of Israel.
“As we move forward in the future, I think people who supported the deal are going to regret that support,” said Ryan, who was elected speaker this fall.
Ryan pledged to punish Iran for transgressions.
“Where we go from here is to make sure that we don’t backslide on sanctions, that we’re tougher on sanctions,” he said. “We’re looking at other things in the House. The last thing we want to do is see backsliding.”
Ryan, the 2012 GOP vice-presidential nominee, tried to avoid harshly criticizing President Obama. But his remarks made clear he is much more in line with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu than is Obama.
“We are partners in this war on terror, radical Islamic terrorism,” he said of Israel and the US.
