A pediatric sleep technologist at a Rhode Island hospital was busted this week for allegedly trading child porn files online, officials announced.
David M. Lavoie, 52, who has worked at Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence for the past seven years, was busted Wednesday on charges of possession of child pornography and transfer of child pornography, Rhode Island State Police said in a statement.
Authorities were on Lavoie’s tail since the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children recently reported to the state’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force that he had been sharing the vile files online, authorities said.
Investigators launched a court-authorized search warrant at Lavoie’s home and discovered child porn there, police said. Lavoie was identified as the alleged owner of the digital media where the illicit images were found.
He was arraigned Wednesday and released on $10,000 personal recognizance bail — on the conditions that he makes no contact with minors and limits his internet use, authorities said.
At this time, police do not believe that Lavoie engaged in any inappropriate behavior with the children at the hospital.
In a statement issued to the Providence Journal, spokeswoman Elena Falcone-Relvas said Lavoie was immediately suspended without pay.
The hospital was “deeply concerned by the charges brought against one of our employees,” she added.
Parents of children under 16 must stay with their child during sleep studies, and all studies are videotaped and reviewed by another hospital employee, Falcone-Relvas’ statement said.
If convicted, Lavoie could face up to 15 years behind bars and a fine of $5,000, authorities said.
