Vice President Mike Pence will tour a mask-making factory in Minnesota and meet with officials in Washington state on Thursday as he leads the Trump administration’s response to the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak.
Pence will tour manufacturer 3M’s facilities to oversee the production of millions of masks ordered by the federal government. He then will fly west to meet Washington Gov. Jay Inslee before taking a red-eye flight home.
The Seattle area is the epicenter of an outbreak with 39 confirmed cases and 10 deaths, the worst in the country. On Wednesday, California reported the first U.S. death outside Washington.
Pence’s trip comes as he seeks to reassure the public and the erratic financial markets amid the outbreak.
“We’ll be bringing our task force out and making sure that Washington state has all the support that they need, and that’s the purpose of the trip,” Pence told reporters in a Wednesday evening briefing.
On Saturday, Pence announced that the feds had contracted with 3M and that “35 million more masks per month will be produced,” adding the administration would be working with other manufacturers, as well.
Pence’s plan to visit Minnesota was announced Monday and he added the Washington leg on Wednesday.
The virus has infected more than 100 people in the U.S. after emerging in China in December. Globally, more than 100,000 people have been infected, with outbreaks in Iran, Italy, and South Korea increasing the chances of a pandemic.
