It’s been a rough few weeks for Sen. Ted Cruz.
The GOPer from the Lone Star State has been mocked so mercilessly, the Texas Observer on Thursday branded him the “country’s least favorite senator” — and that was in a favorable article.
“Despite his abysmal national reputation and the fact that he’s running against a charismatic media darling, Cruz has a ready made advantage for re-election,” the piece reads.
The ignominious distinction came just days after a constituent asked him to provide a DNA sample to prove he was human at a campaign event in Austin — a scene captured on a now-viral video.
But the embarrassing query was just the tip of the humiliating iceberg.
On March 26, the butter-loving lawmaker made the Twitterverse collectively cringe — and chortle — when a constituent posted a photo of herself standing next to a beaming Cruz, as she was wearing a lanyard that mocked him.
“Texas deserves better than Cruz,” the lanyard read in big capital letters, which apparently weren’t big enough for the senator to notice — even though it was mere inches from his body.
“Did you send him away with a ‘Kick Me’ sign on the back of his jacket too?” Twitter user Alameda Mark replied to the photo with laughing emojis.
“This photo is epic. Ted is a bozo deluxe,” user Queen Bacon tweeted.
Barely a week before, Bill Maher called Cruz a “giant a–hole” as he chatted with the Republican’s Democratic opponent, Rep. Beto O’Rourke, on his show, “Real Time with Bill Maher.” The representative laughed in agreement as the audience howled.
O’Rourke had reason to be in a good mood. On Tuesday, his campaign announced it had raised $6.7 million in the first quarter of 2018 — more than any other Democrat running for Senate this year, the Houston Chronicle reported.
Meanwhile, on March 6, Cruz got a self-inflicted wound when he released a honky-tonk, wannabe country rock song that attempted to mock O’Rourke’s liberal leanings.
“If you’re gonna run in Texas, you can’t be a liberal man,” the tune jangles. “Because liberal thought is not the spirit of a Lone Star man.”
His opponents were quick to slam the song on Twitter.
“This coming from a guy named Rafael who goes by the name ted…,” McSribbless tweeted along with a gif that says “what a loser” in capital letters.
“well now I know who I am not voting for,” Haadi Husain tweeted.
Twitter user Natalie Tsai quipped: “if youre gonna run in Texas, you gotta be Beto O’Rourke from El Paso. Not Rafael from Canada.”
Real Clear Politics is still predicting Cruz as the “likely” winner in the November 2018 face-off.
