Democratic presidential hopeful Pete Buttigieg has joined fellow front-runner Bernie Sanders in requesting a partial re-canvass of specific precincts in Iowa after the botched caucuses last week created concerns about the validity of the results.

The Buttigieg campaign’s request comes one day after the Democratic socialist sent a letter to Iowa Democratic Party (IDP) chairman Troy Price asking for a re-canvass of 28 precincts.

Price confirmed the news Monday, saying his organization had received two re-canvass requests, one from Buttigieg and one from Sanders.

“Within the next 48 hours, the Iowa Democratic Party will return its assessment and description of next steps to each respective campaign that made a request,” Price said.

Buttigieg’s campaign requested a re-canvass of 66 precincts, both due to alleged errors and inconsistencies in the reporting of caucus results.

Price would not say Monday how long he expected the partial recount would take, but he did leave open the possibility that campaigns could ask for a recount if they were unsatisfied with the results.

“At this point, I can’t tell you exactly how long this will take, but we should have more information in the next couple of days,” he told reporters.

The Iowa caucus descended into chaos Feb. 3 after an app commissioned by the IDP and created by Shadow Inc. to streamline the process of reporting results botched the entire collection of votes.

Precinct chairs across the state experienced problems downloading or logging into the app, one of the ways they were supposed to be able to send the results from their smaller, individual caucuses to the IDP.

The Iowa Democratic Party said Sunday that Buttigieg won the majority of national convention delegates, capturing 14, while Sanders won 12.
