Mayor Pete Buttigieg changed his campaign schedule to return to South Bend, Indiana, after a man was killed in a police-involved shooting early Sunday.
Buttigieg, a 2020 Democratic presidential candidate, canceled a trip to New York City, where he was to appear Monday at the Democratic National Committee’s annual LGBTQ gala.
He held a news conference with South Bend Police Chief Scott Ruszkowski late Sunday, when they announced the police officer would be placed on paid administrative leave, WNDU-TV reported.
Buttigieg called on witnesses to come forward and said the circumstances surrounding the shooting would be fully investigated.
“We will be striving to reach out to community members,” he said.
Law enforcement officials said the officer responded around 3:30 a.m. Sunday to a call about a suspicious person going through cars.
The officer confronted a man in a vehicle in a parking lot.
The man, carrying a knife, approached the officer, who opened fire.
