Pfizer, the pharmaceutical giant behind one of the coronavirus vaccine efforts, will be able to provide an initial 40 million doses of its vaccine in the US by the end of this year, its CEO said Tuesday.
Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla revealed the news while speaking to shareholders during a Q3 earnings call, saying he expected to be able to hand them over to the US by the end of the year.
Bourla also noted that new vaccine data was scheduled to come out this Friday, ahead of the Nov. 3 presidential election.
That information, however, will not be released until a week after their data and safety monitoring board conducts its review of the drug, meaning that data will not be released prior to the November election.
“In case of a conclusive readout, positive or negative, we will inform the public as soon as we complete the necessary administrative work, which we estimate to be completed within one week from the time we know,” Bourla said during the conference call.
The company, which is developing its vaccine with German biotech firm BioNTech, is one of four candidates going through late-stage clinical trials in the US.
Moderna has said it may know in November whether its shot is effective, but both Johnson & Johnson and AstraZeneca have had to pause their studies after participants got sick.
The news comes one day after Politico reported that the Trump administration will unveil a plan this week to cover out-of-pocket costs of coronavirus vaccines for Americans on Medicare or Medicaid.
The planned rule, first reported Monday, will allow the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to cover vaccines that receive emergency use authorization from the Food and Drug Administration.
Current policy does not allow Medicare or Medicaid to include such treatments in their coverage.
Pfizer has said it intends to apply for emergency use authorization for its coronavirus vaccine before the end of the year.
Doing so allows medical treatments to be legally distributed without FDA approval, which would otherwise keep the drug from reaching the American masses.
The Trump administration has reportedly been working on the initiative for weeks, though it is unclear if an announcement is being planned for before the November election.
The White House could not immediately be reached for comment on Politico’s reporting.
