Philippine authorities shot down claims Tuesday that a teen bird-hunter stumbled upon the skeleton-filled wreckage of missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 on a remote Pacific island.
“I sent people to the site where it (the plane wreck) was supposedly seen and the results were negative,” said Superintendent Glenn Roy Gabor, who is deputy police director of the Tawi-Tawi island chain from which the reports emerged.
“There was someone who was spreading that story but it has no truth to it and the person spreading it has disappeared,” he added.
Gabor told AFP that if a jumbo jet carrying 239 people crashed on Sagbay island — as audio technician Jamil Omar, 46, alleged on Monday — residents would have definitely found the wreckage and piped up.
“We interviewed the local people and they didn’t see anything,” he said. “That is a small area. It is impossible they wouldn’t see something like that.”
Tawi-Tawi governor Nurbert Sahali also released a statement Tuesday saying that no wreckage had been found on the jungle island.
Flight MH370, a Boeing 777, mysteriously vanished on March 8, 2014, while flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.
Authorities speculated for over a year as to what could have happened to the plane, eventually determining that it had inexplicably plunged into the Indian Ocean.
Their beliefs were finally confirmed in July, when a wing part from MH370 washed ashore on Reunion, a French island in the Indian Ocean.
But no other hard evidence has been found since.
