Phoenix is now the fifth-largest city in the United States, new US Census Bureau data shows.

Arizona’s capital recorded the fastest growth of any major city in the United States over the past decade, adding 163,000 more residents.

The city, which 1.6 million people now call home, knocked Philadelphia out of fifth place, according to the latest Census figures.

It is now behind only New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Houston.

Houston was the second-fastest-growing big city but has 700,000 more people than Phoenix.

Phoenix is the only one of the 10 largest US cities to post double-digit population growth at 11.2 percent.
