The Phoenix father whose harrowing confrontation with cops was caught on camera said he has nightmares after they pulled guns on him, his pregnant fiancée and their two young children.
Iesha Harper, 24, and Dravon Ames, 22, confronted city officials Tuesday night at a community meeting — where thousands of other residents gathered to voice their frustrations over the couple’s encounter. They received a standing ovation as they entered Pilgrim Baptist Church.
“It just makes me sick to my stomach. I have nightmares of barrels being pointed in my face and all I could think was, ‘How can I save my daughter?’”Ames told officials, ABC News reported. “No kid should ever see that, nor should she see terror like that.”
The meeting was called by Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego on the heels of the now-viral video that shows police pointing guns at Harper, who is six months pregnant, Ames and their kids, ages 1 and 4.
The May 27 encounter was sparked by an alleged shoplifting incident at a Family Dollar Store, in which the 4-year-old daughter swiped a doll.
“Police were trying to hurt us because she took a doll,” Ames said. “It hurts to see that this is what happens when someone’s shoplifting. If you think it’s about stealing or whatever … mass murderers get walked down and without a scratch.”
Harper, meanwhile, demanded to know why the officers involved haven’t been fired, according to the Arizona Republic.
The family left the church before receiving an answer from officials.
“If there’s no action, then it’s going to be pointless — if there’s no action done to those officers,” Ames said outside the church.
