Even during its construction, the Statue of Liberty was a hit with sightseers.

Photos have recently surfaced showing the statue in pieces before it was shipped to the US from Paris in 1885.

Designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, parts of the statue were displayed around the French capital during its construction, and proved a hit with tourists.

In the images, curious Parisians can be seen posing alongside to the statue’s face and feet.

Construction of the now-iconic landmark was completed in Paris, after which it was disassembled and shipped across the Atlantic in crates.

The statue was dedicated on October 22, 1886, an event that was celebrated with New York’s first ticker-tape parade.
