A plane crash at a Florida air show left one person dead Friday afternoon, according to reports.
The vintage Grumman OV-1 Mohawk burst into flames after crashing into the ground on the runway approach at Witham Field in Stuart, according to Louisiana-based KATC.
“Fire Rescue personnel were already on the scene and had extinguished the flames which, by all appearances, had fully engulfed the airplane,” Martin County Sheriff William Snyder told reporters at the scene.
Martin County Sheriff's OfficeAs a result of the crash, Friday evening’s festivities were canceled and the Stuart Air Show, which was set to start at 5 p.m., is on indefinite delay while federal agents investigate, KATC said.
The single male victim was the only person aboard the plane when it crashed at around 1:15 p.m.
“He flew so far down that, I thought, there’s no way they could have pulled that,” witness Natalie Evans told Palm Beach’s WPTV.
“It just kind of shocked me — stunned me,” Evans said. “I didn’t hear a crash and I waited just a little bit and I saw smoke. That part was very upsetting.”
Grumman built the OV-1 Mohawk model from 1959 to 1970 for the U.S. Army to use for both surveillance and combat, according to the air show website.
Snyder told reporters Friday’s crash was likely the first in Stuart Air Show history.
