Two people died Monday when a private plane crashed in rural Ohio, narrowly missing an occupied home.
The turbo-prop Douglas DC3C-65TP had just lifted off from Stoltzfus Airfield in Wayne County about 50 miles south of Cleveland when it ran into trouble and began tearing through trees and power lines as it plummeted back to earth.
The impact obliterated the plane’s nose cone and cockpit, photos show. It smashed down just feet from the home of Michael Morrison, who called 911.
Pilot Brian Stoltzfus, 55, and co-pilot Curtis Wilkerson, 56, died at the scene, officials told WJW-TV.
It was not clear whether Stoltzfus had any relation to the airfield.
The plane was registered to Priority Air Charter LLC, according to FAA records. The company’s website lists Stoltzfus as its owner.
“Brian loves to fly and spends much of his time in East Africa in missionary aviation. Hunting is a big interest when he’s not in the sky. He and his wife Sandi have four grown children, and three grandchildren,” a bio on the site reads.
Wilkerson was not listed as an employee.
The company could not be reached for comment.
