The pilot of an airplane operated by a military contractor crashed in a residential area near Nevada’s Nellis Air Force Base on Monday afternoon, authorities said.

The aircraft went down at about 2:30 p.m. in a neighborhood about 7 miles outside Las Vegas, Lt. Col. Bryon McGarry confirmed in a statement.

The aircraft was owned by Florida-based company Draken US, who said the unidentified pilot was killed in the crash.

It was immediately clear if anybody on the ground was injured in the wreck.

Nellis hosts periodic training exercises where US and allied pilots conduct mock battles over a restricted military reserve in central Nevada.

Aircraft based there include F-16 Falcon and F-22 Raptor fighter jets, and A-10 Warthog attack jets.
