PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A suspected shoplifter died after police say she ran from store security and jumped over a railing at a Rhode Island shopping mall, falling 25 feet.
Police say the 35-year-old woman was accused of shoplifting at a Nordstrom in Providence Place Mall around 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
When security tried to apprehend her, police say, she escaped to the first level of the parking garage. She then jumped over the railing.
She was taken to Rhode Island Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Her identity has not been released.
A spokeswoman for Nordstrom confirmed a Nordstrom employee was involved.
She said she could not comment on what the woman was thought to have taken or other details of what happened.
