Maybe it’s something in the globally warming water, but across the world, soap-operatic dramas are now playing out daily on an international stage. While we contend with President Trump and an impeachment process, Canada weathers Prime Minister Trudeau’s blackface scandal amidst general mismanagement and England deals with Brexit and Boris Johnson’s predilection for bodacious bottled blondes. Other nations aren’t having it any easier, as leaders from Nigeria to Thailand find themselves enmeshed in their own ready-for-TV scandals.
Thailand
Thailand’s King Maha Vajiralongkorn and Queen Suthida.REUTERSLast week, Thailand’s King Maha Vajiralongkorn stunned observers when he suddenly stripped his royal consort, Sineenat “Koi” Wongvajirapakdi, of her titles and rank for ”misbehavior and disloyalty against the monarch.”
A notice to the public read in part: “[Her] actions are considered as disloyal, ungrateful, and ungracious of His Majesty’s kindness . . . They caused division among the royal servants and led to misunderstanding among the public. These amount to acts of sabotages against the country and the monarchy.”
The big mystery is: What the heck did she do? Due to immense secrecy around the Thai monarchy — it is illegal to speak badly of them — almost nothing is known about why Sineenat fell from grace. The former army nurse, who had served in the King’s royal bodyguard unit, only had the position since July.
The arbitrary king, who is heavily tattooed and has a penchant for small white fluffy poodles, is on his fourth marriage.
Meanwhile, one of his ex-wives fled the country after their divorce, while another — whose parents were arrested and imprisoned — is in hiding. Good luck, Sineenat!
Nigeria
Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari with his wife Aisha Buhari.Deji Yake/EPA/REXA classic soap opera twist: Following a long disappearance, the first lady of Nigeria has re-appeared — just as her husband was about to marry someone else.
President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria was reportedly set to wed one of his female cabinet ministers, Sadiya Farouq, on Oct. 11. (Farouq claims this is untrue.) But plans were supposedly scuppered by the surprise arrival of his wife Aisha, who, up until recently, was on a months-long “holiday” in the United Kingdom.
Fatima Daura, the president’s great-niece, leaked a video which shows Aisha in an angry outburst after coming home to stop the wedding and being locked out of her house.
In an interview with the BBC Hausa, Aisha said there had indeed been plans for her husband to take a second wife, by referring to a “promise of marriage.”
The president, under Muslim law, is allowed to take up to four wives, but has previously avowed he was a monogamist.
Russia
President Vladimir Putin speaks with gymnast Alina Kabaeva.APWhere is the rhythmic gymnast?
Russian president Vladimir Putin has always been more comfortable with his women out of the spotlight.
His first wife, Lyudmila Shkrebneva, has not been seen since their 2013 divorce. His daughters from that marriage, Mariya and Yekaterina, also keep an invisible profile. Now, his longtime love, and rumored wife, Alina Maratovna Kabaeva, has dropped out of sight after reportedly giving birth to twin boys in May.
An Olympic gymnast, Kabaeva is described in a glowing Wikipedia entry as a “model and film star, and a politician” and the current chairwoman of the board of directors of the National Media Group.
According to the Sun, Kabeava “has not been seen in public since October last year when she defended her Ph.D. thesis into training preschool children in rhythmic gymnastics.”
Dubai
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.Getty ImagesSoap operas are nothing without a powerful villain.
In July, Princess Haya — the estranged sixth wife of the ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum — fled the country with the couple’s 11-year-old daughter and 7-year-old son, seeking a protective order against her husband in London. She reportedly left to prevent her daughter from being forced into marriage.
Haya is actually the third woman to (try and) escape Sheikh Mohammed’s clutches. Two of his daughters, Sheikha Shamsa Al Maktoum and Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed Al Maktoum, attempted to abscond in the past. Both were captured by Emirati forces and are, according to advocates, being held in Dubai against their will.
Sheikha Shamsa hasn’t been seen publicly since her 2001 attempt, while Shaika Latifa, who was captured while trying to escape on a boat in the Indian Ocean last year, left behind a damning YouTube video.
“If you are watching this video, it is not such a good thing,” Latifah is seen saying. “Either I’m dead or I’m in a very, very bad situation.”
Morocco
Morocco’s King Mohammed VI poses with son Prince Moulay El Hassan; daughter Princess Lalla Khadija and wife, Princess Lalla Salma.APThe King of Morocco’s wife, Lalla Salma is nicknamed the “Ghost Princess” by the press. Once a visible force on the international royal scene, she has only been seen a handful of times in public — but never in Morocco — over the last two years, following a rumored divorce.
Whispers about a split grew louder after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle visited Morocco this year and didn’t meet with Salma on the day they discussed women’s rights.
She was last spotted in New York City on Sept. 18.
Malaysia
Sultan Muhammad V, center.APSultan Mohammed V, the King of Kelantan, wed Russian model Oksana Voevodina last summer after a whirlwind romance.
Despite the couple’s 23-year age difference, true love was proclaimed, Voevodina converted to Islam, and they quickly sealed the deal with a pregnancy.
But just as quickly as the romance occurred, it unraveled. The king abdicated in January, and a video was revealed of the former Miss Moscow having sex on a first date while taping a reality show. Since then, Malaysian sources have portrayed Voevedina as a gold digger, and racy, decidedly un-Islamic topless pics of her have surfaced.
King Mohammed, back in Malaysia, claims he divorced his nubile wife via Sharia law and refused to accept paternity of her son. Earlier this month, Voevedina, now back in Moscow, told the Daily Mail she is broke and had to sell her $250,000 engagement ring to cover expenses.
