Former White House adviser Steve Bannon reportedly has a secret plan to “cripple” the federal probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Bannon, who was ousted from the White House in August, has been pitching the plan to White House aides as the investigation closes in on President Trump’s inner circle, The Washington Post reported Wednesday.

The political strategist believes Trump needs to fire Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and then cease to cooperate with Special Counsel Robert Mueller, citing executive privilege, the paper said.

Bannon said that Trump “wasn’t fully briefed by his lawyers on the implications” of not invoking executive privilege at the start of the investigation.

“It was a strategic mistake to turn over everything without due process, and executive privilege should be exerted immediately and retroactively,” he told The Washington Post.

Bannon also believes that invoking executive privilege retroactively would nullify all interviews that Mueller and his team have conducted to date.

There was no indication that Trump was considering Bannon’s plan.
