President Biden’s family are questioning whether top campaign aides should be canned after last week’s debate debacle — as some allies accused the Democrat’s preparation team of “political malpractice.”

Talk of axing the staffers unfolded in private as the first family hunkered down at Camp David over the weekend  amid mounting calls for the 81-year-old to give up his re-election campaign, sources told CNN, which did not name any of the aides whose fate was discussed.

However, Politico reported Sunday that White House senior communications adviser Anita Dunn, her husband and Biden’s personal attorney Bob Bauer, and former White House chief of staff Ron Klain were among those blamed for Biden’s disastrous performance Thursday night in Atlanta. 

The family’s chief complaints included that Biden hadn’t been better prepped during debate rehearsals to pivot and go on the attack against former President Donald Trump, that he focused too much on trying to defend his record  — and even that he was overworked and too tired, according to the outlet, which cited three people briefed on the family meeting.

It wasn’t immediately clear which Biden family members were pointing the finger at the trio.

However, discontent with Dunn and Bauer — who reportedly played the role of Trump in mock debates, reprising his role from four years ago — has grown since Thursday, with personal injury attorney and Democratic donor John Morgan tweeting Sunday that “Biden has for too long been fooled by the value of Anita Dunn and her husband. They need to go… TODAY.”

In a separate tweet, referring to the president’s pale appearance on the stage, Morgan asked: “Did Anita Dunce ever have [Biden] stand in front of the camera BEFORE THE DEBATE? To see what he looked like. Did he have makeup which everyone needs for TV?”

In still another tweet, Morgan said Dunn “and the Ivy League know it alls need to be frog marched back to Knickerbocker,” referring to the Democratic political consulting firm SKDK, where Dunn worked before she was hired by the Biden White House.

Biden campaign spokesman Kevin Munoz hit back in defense of the team in a statement, saying: “The aides who prepped the president have been with him for years, often decades, seeing him through victories and challenges. He maintains strong confidence in them.”

What to know about the calls for President Biden to drop out of the 2024 race:

• President Biden’s poor performance in the first 2024 presidential debate left some Democrats unsure of his fitness for office and future as the party’s candidate.
• More than a dozen congressional Democrats have joined in calling for Biden’s exit from the race. Former Biden supporter George Clooney echoed these calls in an op-ed published in the New York Times just weeks after he helped lead a record-breaking fundraiser for the Democrat.
• Democratic voters have continued to raise concerns about Biden’s nomination since the debate, with speculations and suggestions for replacement nominees running rampant.
• Biden’s former running mate Barack Obama has reportedly been trying to pressure him to drop out, and had prior knowledge of Clooney’s op-ed. Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi allegedly told Biden he could not beat former President Donald Trump this time around.
• As the Democratic National Convention approaches, California delegates for the Democratic Party are reportedly in disarray as debate over the president’s chances of re-election threatens to tear the party apart.
• However, the Biden campaign has denied any plans for Biden to bow out and for Kamala Harris to step in as the Democratic nominee. Sources close to the president believe he might not be willing to drop out, while other sources claim he is “receptive” to giving up on a second term.

Former White House press secretary Jen Psaki, now a MSNBC host and analyst, also defended her onetime colleagues Monday, tweeting: “[T]he notion that the issue at the debate was the prep process done by people like @RonaldKlain and Anita Dunn who have successfully prepped many candidates including Obama, Clinton and Biden is absurd.  

“It was a bad debate,” Psaki added. “I have no doubt they were tough, strategic and direct. (Believe me I have seen them in action) but prep does not always determine the outcome. Biden was bad. Important convos about what happens next. But if you are directing your ire at ‘prep’ you are not talking about the right things.”

Biden’s debate strategy was signed off on by campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon, who helped him win in 2020 and was appointed in January to bolster the struggling re-election effort.

Biden’s campaign have insisted repeatedly since the debate that no staff shake-up is under consideration.
