President Biden on Friday indicated that he’s OK with a delay in the Senate impeachment trial for former President Trump.

Biden pleaded ignorance on Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s proposed two-week delay when asked about it, but said he’d be pleased if the Senate could do other business first, such as approving his nominees.

“I haven’t heard the detail on that, but I do think that having some time to get our administration up and running — the more time we have to get up and running and meet these crises, the better,” Biden said in response to a reporter’s question at the White House.

Biden praised the confirmation on Friday of his defense secretary nominee, Lloyd Austin, and the likely impending confirmation of other cabinet members.

“I want to thank the Senate for passing out our secretary of defense. Looks like our secretary of treasury, looks like our secretary of state’s in place,” Biden said.

Some Democrats wanted to delay Trump’s trial to avoid distracting from Biden’s early legislative agenda.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Friday that she will transmit a House-approved article of impeachment to the Senate on Monday, allowing for the trial to begin.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has not outlined a precise timeframe for the trial.

All House Democrats and 10 Republicans impeached Trump last week alleging he incited the deadly Jan. 6 Capitol riot that interrupted certification of Biden’s victory.

At least 17 Senate Republicans would need to vote in favor of convicting Trump for him to be found guilty. If he’s convicted, he could be barred form holding office again in a simple majority vote.

Many Republicans, including McConnell (R-Ky.), say they are undecided on whether to convict Trump.
