President Biden on Wednesday urged US employers to give their workers paid time off to get coronavirus vaccinations.
He announced the initiative as the administration said it met Biden’s goal of administering 200 million shots within his first 100 days as president — with more than 50 percent of American adults having received at least one shot.
“I’m calling on every employer large and small in every state to give employees the time off they need with pay to get vaccinated. And any time they need with pay to recover if they’re feeling under the weather after the shot,” Biden said.
“No working American should lose a single dollar from their paycheck because they chose to fulfill their patriotic duty of getting vaccinated.”
Biden said the federal government will reimburse some employers for giving the paid time off. The federal reimbursement will apply only to companies with fewer than 500 employees.
“To make sure this policy comes at no cost to small or medium-sized businesses with fewer than 500 employees, the IRS has posted instructions for how employers can get reimbursed for the cost of providing paid leave for employees to get vaccinated and recover from the side effects if they have any,” Biden said.
“That reimbursement … is thanks to a program I launched in the American Rescue Plan. So again, every employee should get paid leave to get a shot, and businesses you know that they can provide without a hit to their bottom line. There’s no excuse for not getting it done.”
Biden praised companies for already encouraging vaccinations without government subsidies.
“We’re already seeing employers large and small stepping up to meet this historic moment. The grocery store Kroger’s offered employees $100 to get vaccinated. It helped push the vaccination rates from 50 percent to 75 percent among their associates,” he said.
Biden touted salon owner Patty Young of Springfield, Ohio, for signing up customers for appointments when they get their hair cut.

The directive comes as businesses — many financially devastated over the past year because of shutdowns and closures — begin to emerge from the coronavirus restrictions.

“Now is the time to step up our efforts to reach every working-age adult in America, and today’s announcement to help employers offset the cost of paid time off is an important step in getting America’s workforce vaccinated,” the White House said.
