Bill and Hillary Clinton wasted little time in endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris Sunday to become the Democratic Party’s nominee for president after Joe Biden dropped out of the race.

While lavishing praise on Biden’s accomplishments in office, the Clintons, who were rumored to have been among those resisting private calls for him to step aside, urged the party to unite around Harris.

“We are honored to join the President in endorsing Vice President Harris and will do whatever we can to support her,” they said in a joint statement.

“Now is the time to support Kamala Harris and fight with everything we’ve got to elect her. America’s future depends on it.”

Shortly after his political earthquake announcement, Biden, 81, endorsed Harris, 59, to take his place as the party standard-bearer.

Prior to the bombshell dropout, Democratic mutineers against Biden had splintered over exactly how the process to replace him should unfold, with some preferring an open process instead of coronating Harris.

During that revolt, in which over three dozen Democrats in Congress publicly called on Biden to pass the torch, the Clintons privately encouraged donors to still give to the incumbent president, CNN reported. 

Some donors had grown squeamish about opening up their coffers to the Biden-Harris amid uncertainty over whether or not he’d drop out. 

Harris had a call with about 300 donors last Friday in a bid to reassure them about the ticket. 

The 81-year-old Biden is older than both Bill, 77, and Hillary, 76. He is the oldest president in US history, though former President Donald Trump may top that if he wins the Nov. 5 election and serves out a full term. 

Both of the Clintons lauded Biden for his performance in office. 

“President Biden has capped his extraordinary career of service with a Presidency that has lifted America out of an unprecedented pandemic, created millions of new jobs, rebuilt a battered economy, strengthened our democracy, and restored our standing in the world,” they said in a statement.

“By any measure, he has advanced our founders’ charge to build a more perfect union and his own stated goal of restoring the soul of our nation,” they added. 

Underpinning the endorsement of Harris are fears among some Democrats that infighting could rip the party apart before the Nov. 5 election. 

There are only 107 days left until the presidential election. 

Harris thanked Biden for his endorsement Sunday and expressed her intent to carry the Democratic Party to victory. 

“On behalf of the American people, I thank Joe Biden for his extraordinary leadership as President of the United States and for his decades of service to our country,” she posted on X.

“I am honored to have the President’s endorsement and my intention is to earn and win this nomination.”
