Arrests by Border Patrol agents dropped to a 46-year low in the past fiscal year, even as detentions soared during President Trump’s first months in office, the Department of Homeland Security reported Tuesday.
The patrol made 310,531 arrests during the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30 — the fewest since 1971 and a 25 percent drop from 2016.
Officials have credited the drop to fewer attempts to cross the Mexican border due to Trump’s immigration policies.
