A warm handshake and even warmer words at the start of Friday’s G20 meetings showed the “bro-mance” is still going strong between President Trump and Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
Trump smiled and joked as he greeted Abe, who is hosting the two-day, international summit in Osaka, noting that it was the second time in two months that he was visiting Japan.
“We just left Japan and now I’m back,” Trump quipped.
The president had enjoyed a four-day state visit to Japan in late May. The visit included the two leaders dining on double cheeseburgers, playing golf and taking in a sumo wrestling championship.
The two leaders have differed on issues including North Korea missile launches and Iran. But on Thursday, there were only cordial words for the cameras.
“Everybody’s talking about it all over the world,” Trump said fondly of the sumo match, at which he was invited into the ring to present a giant trophy.
“They’re building magnificent plants,” he said in praise of Japan’s auto industry. “We’ll be discussing trade, we’ll be discussing military.”
Japanese brands including Nissan, Honda and Toyota are building or expanding plants in Tennessee, Alabama, Kentucky and Michigan, Abe said.
Later, the two were joined by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi — with Trump initiating a three-way fist bump among the leaders.
He also offered an olive branch to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, saying, “She is a fantastic person, a fantastic woman and I’m glad to have her as a friend.”
