The Health Department came up short in its annual distribution of free condoms last year.
City officials blamed the Trump administration for cutting federal funding aimed at promoting safe sex — but refused to provide any details.
Records in the Mayor’s management Report show the Health Department distributed 20,917,000 male condoms in the fiscal year ending June 30, down 40.6 percent from the 35,220,000 given out the previous year.
“This decrease was due to a delayed condom order related to budget implementation and lower federal funding amounts for traditional safer sex products,” the agency said.
Despite the drop-off, syphilis cases decreased by 6.9 percent during the same period and new HIV diagnoses declined by 14.3 percent.
The Health Department distributes condoms and other safe-sex products to more than 3,500 locations, including hospitals, clinics, bars, clubs and nail salons.
