FBI Director James Comey asked for more cash to continue his probe of the Trump administration’s possible ties to Russia just days before he was unceremoniously canned by the president, a new report said Wednesday.

The FBI chief — an Obama appointee abruptly fired by Trump on Tuesday — had asked the Justice Department for a big bump in money as well as personnel for the bureau’s probe into Russia’s meddling in the presidential election, according to the New York Times, which cited three sources with knowledge of the request.

Comey asked for the help during a meeting last week with Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who wrote the Justice Department’s memo used to justify his firing.

But lawmakers from both sides of the aisle charged that the real reason was Trump’s frustration over the ongoing Russia probe, which he has dismissed as “fake news.”
