Former FBI Director James Comey blasted President Donald Trump for “lying” about the law enforcement agency and called out GOP lawmakers for not intervening, asking how they will “explain this to their grandchildren.”
In a series of tweets before Comey’s posting, Trump continued to press his claims without providing evidence that the Obama administration’s FBI embedded a spy in his 2016 campaign for political purposes.
“Facts matter. The FBI’s use of Confidential Human Sources (the actual term) is tightly regulated and essential to protecting the country,” Comey said. “Attacks on the FBI and lying about its work will do lasting damage to our country. How will Republicans explain this to their grandchildren.”
The former G-man said the lies start at the top.
“Dangerous time when our country is led by those who will lie about anything, backed by those who will believe anything, based on information from media sources that will say anything,” he said, adding: “Americans must break out of that bubble and seek truth. ”
Trump accused the “Criminal Deep State” of being involved in planting the informant in his campaign in tweets earlier Wednesday and called the scandal “SPYGATE,” saying it could turn out to be “one of the biggest political scandals in history!”
On Wednesday, Trump denied he is undercutting the Justice Department’s Russia investigation by raising allegations that the FBI planted an informant in his 2016 campaign, saying he’s actually doing a “service to the country.”
“We’re cleaning everything up. This was a terrible situation. What we’re doing is we’re cleaning everything up. What I’m doing is a service to this country,” Trump told reporters outside the White House.
He also said he did a “great service” to the nation by firing former FBI Director James Comey, who has been attacking the president for “lying” about the agency’s conduct in the Russia probe.
“I think James Comey has got a lot of problems. If you look at all of the lies, the tremendous lies . . . At some point, they have an IG report, and then let’s see what James Comey has to say,” Trump said, referring to the Justice Department’s inspector-general examination of the FBI’s role in the campaign probe.
