A police officer shown in footage wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat during the US Capitol riot did it to win the trust of protesters so he could save fellow cops trapped inside the building, according to a report Friday.

Capitol Police Lt. Tarik Khalid Johnson, 45 — who has since been suspended from the department for his actions during the riot — donned the cap in a ploy to get protesters to push him through the crowd and into the building in order to mount a rescue, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The Trump-boosting disguise helped him free more than a dozen officers trapped inside the building, his colleagues told the paper. It also allowed him to close doors to keep more rioters from storming inside, a witness said.

Video footage reviewed by  the Journal shows Johnson leading a crowd of protesters into the building before freeing 16 officers from the violent mob.

Johnson is a registered Democrat and isn’t known among fellow cops as a Trump supporter, his co-workers told the paper.

It’s unclear where Johnson got the cap, but Chris Jones, a US Marine Corps vet and photojournalist, said he saw someone put it on his head, the paper reported.

Johnson is one of three officers suspended due to actions taken during the deadly Capitol siege last week.

A Capitol police spokesman said the department is reviewing footage of officers who are potentially in violation of department policies but didn’t elaborate on which one Johnson may have violated.

Johnson didn’t respond to the paper’s requests for comment.
